Village health workers to get rapid HIV test kits in India

New Delhi: Thousands of village health workers across India will soon be equipped to conduct AIDS tests through rapid HIV test kits, which need just a prick on a person's fingertip and the results are known in 20 minutes.

“We have recently adopted the Whole Blood Fingerprick Testing Technology (WBFTT) and have piloted the project in a few districts. We hope it will be rolled out across the country by early 2009,”said Ajay Khera, Joint Director of the National Aids Control Organisation (NACO).

Bill Gates announces USD 23 million HIV/AIDS grant to India

NEW DELHI: On the day he leaves Microsoft to work for his pet social sector projects, software pioneer Bill Gates on Friday announced a USD 23 million grant to India to control the scourge of HIV/AIDS in the country.

The announcement was made when Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss called upon him at his office in Seattle, United States.

Gates appreciated the efforts made by the Minister for improving the Health sector in India and congratulated him for the effective implementation of the National Rural Health Mission in India.

What has been the growth rate of HIV/AIDS and the incidence of the disease in India?

The world's second most populous country, India, is experiencing a highly varied HIV epidemic, which appears to be stable or diminishing in some parts while growing at modest rates in others. Approximately 6 million people are suffering with AIDS in India. Today, the world's largest democracy has entered a critical period in its fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
